Choose the htmlslides workflow when a developer or AI coding agent will build a custom HTML deck and the team values inspectable source, browser-native interaction, and a dedicated playback/sharing layer. Gamma is the more complete authoring product; htmlslides offers more implementation freedom but asks you to supply and review the implementation.

How we compared

We compared the actual jobs rather than the “AI presentation” label: getting from source material to a first draft, controlling layout, editing with a team, presenting, exporting, embedding, and maintaining the artifact. We checked Gamma’s current help documentation on import, slide sizing, presentation, and export. htmlslides behavior is assessed against the shipped product contract: sign-in is required to import, and the platform is not a one-prompt automatic deck generator.

Creation workflow

Gamma combines prompting, document import, AI restructuring, themes, image generation, and editing in one web application. Its official import guide says plain import brings in text while AI import can restyle or transform it; original styling and layout are not preserved. This is a productive model when the author wants a strong first draft without managing code.

htmlslides begins later. You select a template or design direction, ask an external coding agent—or a developer—to create HTML, review the result, and then import the finished file or .hslides package after signing in. That workflow can express nearly anything the browser can render, but it includes prompt design, code review, asset packaging, and cross-browser testing. A user seeking a one-click generator should prefer Gamma.

Layout and interaction

Gamma uses responsive cards and also supports fixed-height slide settings. Its page setup documentation describes slide size, backgrounds, SEO metadata, and export settings. The editor provides themes and AI assistance without exposing a full web codebase.

An HTML deck can use custom CSS, SVG, Canvas, local fonts, application components, and JavaScript. This is materially better for product demos, simulations, technical visualizations, and strict brand systems. It is materially worse when the team wants guardrails and direct visual editing. Unlimited implementation freedom is not the same as unlimited time or design skill.

Editing and collaboration

Gamma keeps content, comments, and AI edits in its workspace, which suits mixed-skill teams. The htmlslides editor deliberately supports controlled text and speaker-note changes for an owned deck, not arbitrary layout or style editing. Structural changes return to the HTML source and its authoring workflow.

If a marketer must change a chart layout five minutes before a meeting, Gamma is safer. If an engineering team wants pull-request review, reusable components, or programmatic localization, HTML source is easier to govern. Choose the editing model of the people who will maintain the deck, not only the person who creates version one.

Presenting, sharing, and export

Gamma provides a hosted present mode, presenter view, notes, and link sharing. Its official export guide lists PDF, PNG, and PowerPoint, explains free-account watermark behavior, and documents visual differences such as gradient or frosted-background fallbacks. That is a more complete built-in export story than htmlslides currently offers for editable office formats.

htmlslides focuses on browser playback, sharing, embedding, fullscreen presentation, speaker notes, and video workflows for imported HTML decks. The underlying source can also be hosted independently. If .pptx handoff is required, Gamma has the clearer native path; an HTML-first team should plan a PDF or separately authored Office fallback.

Ownership, privacy, and maintenance

Gamma stores the editable project in its platform and exports useful derivatives. htmlslides can accept an artifact whose source remains in your repository, but hosted viewing still depends on the service unless you deploy the HTML elsewhere. Neither model removes vendor, privacy, or access questions.

Review whether prompts and imported documents may be sent to an AI service, who can open share links, whether downloads are permitted, and how a deck is revoked. For HTML, also audit scripts, external assets, analytics, and content security policy.

Run a two-deck trial

Use the same source brief to build one eight-slide deck in each workflow. Require a data chart, branded layout, source citations, speaker notes, one reviewer edit, a public share, an offline fallback, and a corrected claim after publication. Track elapsed human time, not AI generation time alone. Then ask the actual maintainer to make the next revision. The better tool is the one that remains understandable after the novelty of the first draft wears off.
